A Credit Freeze is a way to block your credit reports. It makes things a lot tougher for an identity thief to get a loan or open a credit account in your name. While a freeze is in place, no one, not even you can open an account. Lenders, insurers and even employers doing background checks are not able to access your credit file.
There is no fee associated with freezing your credit. At one time, credit freezes carried fees that varied by state, but they're now FREE in the U.S.A.
A credit freeze will not affect your credit score in any way. It will impact your ability to qualify for a loan or credit card unless you thaw your credit before submitting your application. If you're lifting the freeze temporarily, make sure you have enough time to complete the loan application and underwriting process.
Credit freezes can create delays and problems when access to your credit reports is needed quickly. This can happen when you apply for a loan or credit card; however, if you are applying for a job, trying to rent an apartment or applying for insurance, a credit freeze will not impact you. Companies usually don't extend credit if one or more of your credit reports are frozen. If you request a credit thaw online or by phone, the credit bureaus are required by law to complete the request within an hour. Requests via mail can take a few days.
A credit freeze can help reduce your exposure if you suspect identity theft, but it won't eliminate it entirely. It's important to keep track of your credit score and check your credit reports regularly. As you stay on top of your credit scores and reports, you'll be in a good position to detect potential fraud sooner, minimizing any damage to your credit history.
You'll need to file a credit freeze request with all three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equafax, TransUnion), to be effective. During the process, you'll need to answer a handful of questions to verify your identity.
You'll also need to provide your Social Security number, a copy of a photo ID and proof of residence, such as a recent utility bill. Depending on the bureau, you may get a PIN you can use to freeze and unfreeze your report in the future.
If you plan to apply for credit with a security freeze on your credit reports, you'll need to lift the freezes, either temporarily or permanently, before you apply to ensure the lender can view your reports during its credit check.
I recommend reporting any fraud to your local police department, this way you will have something on file. It may take a few days for a police report to be available.
In order for you to get credit, you will have to call the three major credit bureaus, supply them a personal identification numbers (PIN) which they gave you. The freeze will be lifted in 2-3 days, depending on your state.
If your credit file is frozen and you need to apply for credit, you can lift the freeze. You must go to each Credit Bureau again. Each bureau is a little bit different. The credit bureaus will give you the option of unfreezing your account permanently or thawing it temporarily. A temporary unfreeze makes your credit report available to creditors for a set time, while a permanent thawing opens it until you decide to freeze it again
You can specify how long you want the freeze to be lifted — a day, week, or more. Temporarily lifting the freeze will allow you to apply with multiple lenders in order to get the best rate, as long as the applications are processed within the time frame you specified. .
If you know for a fact that only one lender will be trying to access your report, you can choose to request a one-time-use PIN instead. Check with your lender in advance to make sure they have the ability to enter a single-use PIN when accessing your credit file. If they do, you can provide this PIN to the lender. This will allow only that particular lender to access your report a single time.
If you no longer wish to have a security freeze on your credit file, you can also request permanent removal. You may also request removal by phone or by mail.If you submit your request in writing, be sure to include the following information:
